Aeolian Processes in Sand Dunes

?
What is the name of a sand dune system?
Psammosere.
1 of 9
Name examples of locations that contain psammoseres.
Netherlands coast, Les Landes (SW France), West Wittering (SE UK)
2 of 9
What are the 6 optimum conditions for psammoseres to form?
1) Abundant supply of sand (usually from sea bed) 2) A low beach gradient. 3) A macro-tidal range. 4) Strong prevailing onshore winds. 5) An area of 'inland space' for dunes to develop on. 6) Vegetation to colonise the dunes once formed.
3 of 9
Define aeolian processes
Action of wind.
4 of 9
What is the most common transport process of sand?
Saltation.
5 of 9
Where do dunes usually begin to form?
Above the spring high tide level.
6 of 9
Why do wet climates make it harder for sand to be moved?
Because sand clumps together.
7 of 9
How do sand dunes begin to form?
1) Aeolian processes carry sand up the beach & deposits it around/on an obstacle (e.g. wood/vegetation). 2) Sand won't be moved until the wind reaches threshold velocity. 3) A fall in wind velocity will deposit the sand.
8 of 9
What is the wind's threshold velocity?
When the wind's velocity is fast enough to move the particles of sand.
