What is an AED?

What is step 5 of CPR?
If normal breathing is absent,, kneel beside patient, place heel of hand in centre of chest (lower half of breastbone), place other hand on top interlocking fingers, keep arms straight

How do you carry out chest compressions?
Press down on sternum to a depth of 5-6cm, Repeat at rate 100-120 per min

Following 30 chest compressions, how many rescue breaths are needed?

How are rescue breaths delivered?
Open the airway using head tilt chin lift. Pinch the soft part of the nose. Take a normal breath and deliver 2 rescue breaths to the victim. Each breath should take no more than 1 second. Watch victims chest for signs of rise/fall.

You continue to give 30 compressions to 2 breaths, until when?
A health professional tells you to stop/ You become exhausted/ The victim is definitely waking up, moving, eyes opening, and breathing normally.

What should you do if an AED arrives?
Attach the electrode pads to the victims bare chest. CPR should be continued if possible (if more than one rescuer). Follow the spoken/visual instructions. Ensure no one is touching the victim whilst the machine is analysing rhythm.

What is different about CPR on children and infants?
Give five initial rescue breaths before starting chest compressions. Compress the chest by approx. one-third of it's depth. For children, use 1 hand. For infants use 2 fingers. 15:2 ratio.

Is it necessary to do rescue breaths?
No, just recommended. It's necessary to do chest compressions.
