What is an authoritarian personality?
Characterised as having extreme respect for authority and being obedient to those who are superior, aswell as being hostile to those they see as inferior.

He developed a psychodynamic theory as to why people develop an authoritarian personality.

How did Adorno create his theory?
He used projective tests to access participants subconcious thoughts about racial prejudice, aswell as interviewing them about their political views and childhood.

What did he find?
1) The authoritarian personality is the result of strict, harsh, physical punishment. 2) children quickly learn to obey and develop a strong respect for authority.

How does Adorno's theory draw on Freud's ideas?
He used the theory of displacement - the anger at the father is displaced onto another racial group.

What did Adorno develop from this theory?
He created the F-scale, which is a questionnaire to measure the authoritarian personality.

How does the F-scale support Milgram's study?
Milgram re-interviewed 20 random obedient and 20 random non-obedient participants and found the obedient participants scored higher on the F-scale (and vice versa).

What are some criticisms of the F-scale?
1) it is reductionist. 2) it relies on introspective data like memories. 3) there are lots of demand characteristics. 4) the use of a questionnaire reduces accuracy because people may misundertand questions or lie.
