What are preservatives?
Additives that prevent bacteria from growing- so the food lasts longer

Make food look more attractive and more appealing. Add colour to some thing colourless and return food to its natural colour if lost during processing

Improve the taste or aroma of a food product

Vinegar used to pickle foods. Salt is used to cure meat.

Caramel is a natural food colouring, used to make products darkish brown. Tartrazine is artificial, used to make products a yellow colour.

Vanilla can be natural or artificial (vanillin solution), used for a vanilla flavouring. Artificial sweetening agents are used in some deserts to add sweetness.

Name two disadvantages of additives
Some people are allergic to certain additives and they can disguise poor quality ingredients- such as processed meat.
