Radioactivity: How do you work out the mass of the original nucleus?
Mass of daughter nuclei + neutrons
1 of 20
Car Safety & Momentum: How do you work out stopping distance(m)
Thinking distance(m) + breaking distance(m)
2 of 20
A person is travelling at 30mph, they have a thinking distance of 9m and a breaking distance of 14(meters). What is their stopping distance?
23m. 9m+14m=23m
3 of 20
How do you work out momentum? Give the units of measurement
Mass(kg) X Velocity(m/s)=Momentum(kg m/s)
4 of 20
An elephant has a mass of 2000kg and has a velocity of 5m/s. Work out the momentum
2000kg X 5m/s = 10,000kg m/s
5 of 20
A drone has a mass of 3kg and a velocity of -600m/s (this means it's moving in the other direction) work out the momentum
3kg X -600m/s = -1800kg m/s
6 of 20
How do you work out the new momentum if two objects collide?
You add the momentum of both of the objects.
7 of 20
The elephant and the drone collide into each other. Work out the new momentum.
10,000 + -1800kg m/s = 8200kg m/s. No negative figure so moves in the direction of the elephant.
8 of 20
How do you work out velocity? Give the units
Velocity = Momentum(kg m/s) / Mass (kg)
9 of 20
Work out the combined velocity of the elephant and the pixie. (same figures)
2000kg + 3 kg = 2003kg. 8200kg m/s / 2003kg = 4.09. New velocity = 4.09m/s to the right
10 of 20
How do you work out the resultant force?
Momentum(kg m/s) / time taken for crash (in this scenario)
11 of 20
A truck has a momentum of 60,000kg m/s and takes 3 seconds to crash. Work out the resultant force
60,000kg m/s / 3s = 20,000N
12 of 20
Velocity & Acceleration: How do you calculate speed? Give the units of measurement.
Distance(m) / Time(s) = Speed(m/s) (same for velocity, just not speed, it'll be velocity)
13 of 20
How do you work out the average speed?
The distance travelled / the time it took
14 of 20
A human ran 100 meters and it took 10 seconds. Work out the average speed
100m / 10s = 10m/s (average speed)
15 of 20
How do you calculate acceleration?
Change in velocity (m/s) / time (s) = acceleration(m/s^2)
16 of 20
A sprinter tries to overtake the lead runner in the last 4 seconds of a race. Their velocity changes from 10m/s to 12m/s
2 / 4 = 0.5m/s^2. Acceleration = 0.5m/s^2
17 of 20
How do you work out the speed on a distance time graph if a diagonally straight line for constant speed is present?
You work out the gradient of the line. y/x=gradient. Y axis = distance. X axis = time. Distance / time = speed.
18 of 20
How do you work out acceleration on a velocity time graph?
We use the straight diagonal lines, acceleration is the change in velocity / time it took. So from two points there has to be a change in velocity. y / x = acceleration.
19 of 20
How do you work out distance on a velocity time graph?
Find any section of a velocity where you see a horizontal line at a constant speed, you can use the area under to work out distance travelled over this time. You multiply the velocity value by the time it took. Speed x time = distance.
