What have desert animals adapted to do?
Keep cool and use water efficiently
1 of 13
In what ways are desert animals efficient with water?
They produce small amounts of concentrated urine and they sweat less
2 of 13
How do desert animals stay cool? (and example)
They have thin layers of body fat and a thin coat to help lose body heat. For example, camels keep most of their fat in their humps.
3 of 13
How have desert animals adapted to camouflage?
They have sandy coloured fur (like a camel or kangaroo) in order to hide from predators or sneak up on prey.
4 of 13
What have Arctic animals adapted to do?
Keep warm and reduce heat loss
5 of 13
In what ways are Arctic animals able to keep warm? (2)
By having a small surface area compared to volume and by being well insulated with a thick layer of fat and thick, greasy fur to prevent cooling from water or sweat (as grease is water repellant).
6 of 13
In what way have Arctic animals adapted to camouflage?
They have white fur to avoid predators and sneak on prey
7 of 13
What have desert plants adapted to do?
Making the most of what little water there is as efficiently as possible
8 of 13
How do desert plants reduce water loss?
Plants like cacti have spikes rather than leaves which do not lose much water through vapour. They also have a small surface area to volume ratio which also reduce water loss.
9 of 13
How do desert plants keep hold of water?
They store it in its thick stem in water storage tissues
10 of 13
How do desert plants maximise water absorption?
Some cacti have shallow but extensive roots to absorb water quickly over a large area whereas other cacti have deep roots to access water underground
11 of 13
How have some plants and animals adapted to deter predators?
Some plants have armour like thorns or sharp spines. Some animals have shells to make it hard for them to be eaten. Others produce poisons like bees or poison ivy and others have warning colours (like wasps) to scare off predators.
12 of 13
What are extremophiles?
Microorganisms that are adapted to live in extreme conditions like volcanic vents, salty lakes or in high pressure on the sea bed.
