Adaptations

?
Define evolution.
Evolution is the gradual change in inherited characteristics over time, it can lead to new species.
1 of 8
Who developed the theory of evolution through natural selection?
Charles Darwin.
2 of 8
Give a reason that the theory of evolution wasn't accepted by Darwin's peers at first.
There wasn't much evidence to support his theory, it went against the idea that god created the world and all it's inhabitants.
3 of 8
Who described their own theory of evolution in which organisms adapted to their environment during their lifetimes and these characteristics were inherited by their offspring?
Jean-Baptiste Lamarck.
4 of 8
Why are there gaps in the fossil record?
Many early forms of life were soft-bodied meaning they leave very few traces behind, it is likely that alot of traces that were left behind were destroyed by geological activity.
5 of 8
Describe some evidence for evolution.
Fossils provide some evidence for evolution as scientists can observe changes in fossils over millions of years, the development of antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria can be explained by the theory of natural selection.
6 of 8
Explain Darwin's theory of natural selection.
Darwin observed that- organisms produce large numbers of offspring, populations stay at a steady size, organisms vary, characteristics can be inherited. Darwin concluded that organisms pass their characteristics onto their offspring.
7 of 8
Explain Darwin's theory of natural selection pt.2
He concluded that the organisms that can survive and reproduce are more suited to their environment.
