Didn't abolish passes!!! Required a reference book for each African adult which needed to be presented on demand

Gave urban rights to a minority of African people who had been born in town, worked for 10 years in town or lived there for 15 years. African families unable to buy land or houses in cities.

Bantu Education Act 1953
Content of education segregated. Schools for African children brought under state control. Africans limited in educational opportunities.

Extension of University Education Act 1959
Ensured that University of Fort Hare came under government control. Planned for full segregation by race of the largely white English-language universities.

Suppression of Communism Act 1950
Gave government power to ban publications which were believed to help spread Communism. People could be barred from holding office, practicing as lawyers and attending meetings if their views were too leftist

Public Safety Act 1953
Revived so it could be used to arrest thousands of political leaders who opposed apartheid during the State of Emergency (after Sharpeville)

Unlawful Organisations Act 1960
Aimed at ANC and PAC. Allowed government to declare any organisation as illegal if it posed a 'threat to public safety'

Native Building Workers Act 1951
Municipalities could use African workers on African houses.

Extension of University Education Act 1959
Made it a criminal offence for a non-white student to register for a formerly open university without permission from the Minister of Internal Affairs
