What does the pH scale measure?
How acidic or alkaline a solution is.
1 of 17
What can you use to check the pH of a substance?
Universal indicator, litmus paper, Phenolphthalein, Methyl orange.
2 of 17
acid + base --> .................. + ................
water + salt
3 of 17
Acid + metal oxide --> ...............+ .................
water + salt
4 of 17
Acid + metal hydroxide -->
water + salt
5 of 17
What do titrations allow you to find?
Exactly how much acid is needed to neutralize a quantity of alkaline.
6 of 17
How do you work out the concentration of a substance?
moles / volume
7 of 17
Acid + metal carbonate --> ........ + ........... + ..........................
salt + water + carbon dioxide
8 of 17
calcium oxide + water --> ......................
calcium hydroxide
9 of 17
calcium hydroxide + carbon dioxide --> ................... + ....................
calcium carbonate + water

What does the rate of reaction depend on? (4)
Temperature, concentration, catalyst, surface area of solids.
11 of 17
How do you calculate the rate of reaction?
Amount of reactant used or amount or product formed / time
12 of 17
How can you measure the rate of reaction? (3)
Precipitation, change in mass (usually a gas is given off), the volume of gas given off.
13 of 17
What increases the amount of collisions happening in a substance? (3)
Higher temperature, higher concentration, larger surface area.
14 of 17
How does a solid catalyst work?
By giving the reacting particles a surface to stick to.
15 of 17
What are the advantages of using catalysts in industry?
Can be re-used. Increase the rate of reaction, saves money as the plant doesn't need to run for as long. Allows reaction to happen at a lower temperature.
16 of 17
What are the disadvantages of using catalysts in industry?
Can be expensive to buy. Often need to be removed from the product and cleaned. Different reactions need different catalysts.
