Describe breathing control
-Relaxed shoulders
-Instruct patient to breathe in through nose and out through mouth
-Normal breathing
-Place hands on patient's upper abdomen to feel rising and falling

-3 to 5 long deep breaths in through nose
-Pause for 2/3 s
-Breath out slowly through mouth

Describe forced expiratory technique (medium v huff)
-Function: mobilise secretions that are lower down
-Take a normal size breath in and active, long breath out
-Trying to steam up mirror

Describe forced expiratory technique (high v huff)
-Function: mobilises secretions in upper airways
-Take a normal breath in, open mouth wide and breath out quickly
-Only perform 1-2 huffs together
-Listen for crackles when you huff, clear secretions
-Repeat cycle for 10-15 mins
