What is the difference between pigments and dyes?
Dyes are soluble in water, pigments are not. Dyes are made into a thick paste whereas pigments are fixed using a synthetic resin binder.

What are the 2 different methods of screen printing called?
Flat screen printing; rotary screen printing

What is flat screen printing?
Fabric is fed onto a table, where different screens use a different colour to add to the pattern, building it up. Fabric is then dried and finished.

What is rotary screen printing?
Screen is a mesh rolled, and each screen adds a different colour. Dye is fed to the centre of the rollers and pushed out of holes in the rollers to give the pattern.

What is roller printing?
Fabric is fed on a roller, and a series of other rollers transfer dye from colour troughs to engraved rollers which print the pattern onto the fabric.

What is transfer printing?
Similar to iron on transfers. Design is printed on special paper and wound onto a roller. A dry heat press transfers the design. The heat turns the dye to vapour which transfers to the fabric under pressure.

What is transfer printing also known as?
Sublimation printing

What is the resist dyeing technique?
Fabric is printed with chemicals to prevent dye being taken up in certain areas. Also includes tie dye and batik.

What is the direct dyeing technique?
Design is printed directly onto the fabric

What is the discharge dyeing technique?
The dyed fabric is printed with a paste containing chemicals which destroy the dye in areas according to the design.
