what does cell membrane do?
- separates outside and inside of cell. - controls what goes in and out
1 of 16
what does a nucleus do?
-contains cells genetic material as DNA molecules, co-ordinates cells activities including growth metabolism, protein synthesis and reproduction
2 of 16
structure of a nucleus?
membrane bound structure
3 of 16
what do ribosomes do?
-protein synthesis, make protein which is needed for cell functions such as repairing damage or direct chemical processes.
4 of 16
what is the structure of ribosomes like? and where are they found?
- two subunits, one thinner, one bigger. -found floating around in the cytoplasm
5 of 16
What do mitochondria do?
-main energy molecule used by a cell, aerobic respiration. - the amount of mitochondria in a cell depends on the energy needed to be produced.
6 of 16
what is the structure of mitochondria?
- has 2 membranes, and an increased surface area
7 of 16
what do centrioles do ?
- help in cell division (mitosis), separates chromosomes during mitosis . - forms cilia and flagella
8 of 16
what are the structures of centrioles? where are they found?
- tube like structure. Found close to the nucleus.
9 of 16
what do lysosomes do? structure?
- digest large molecules, carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nuclei acids
10 of 16
what does a golgi aparatus do?
-modifies proteins for secretion. - creates Lysosomes. - involved in transport of lipids
11 of 16
where is golgi aparatus found?
in cytoplasm near nucleus
12 of 16
what does rough endoplasmic reticlum do ?
- plays a role in synthesis of protein.
13 of 16
where are endoplasmic reticulums found?
studded on the surface with ribosomes, found in eukaryotic cells
14 of 16
what does smooth endoplasmic reticulum do?
- makes hormones and lipids, distributes products through the cell and organism. - processes toxins
15 of 16
where are smooth endoplasmic reticulum found?
in animal and plant cells
