What does patriarchy stereotype women as?
Patriarchy stereotypes women as ‘other’ – defined only by their differences from male norms and values. (Many women novelists in the 19th century had to publish under male names to get the work out there)

What does biology and culture determine? What gets realised during feminist theory?
Biology determines sex, culture determines gender. In feminist theory, all the traits we associate with masculinity and femininity are learned and socialised.

Gender issues play a part in every aspect of human production and experience, including literature. Feminists feel that they should not use patriarchal theories to apply to their areas of concern e.g. Marxism and psychoanalysis.

Feminist theory is often disciplinary - in terms of psychoanalysis, things are looked at on an individual level (desire etc.). In terms of Marxism, it is from the point of view of the poor and Feminism says it is gender and combines all three theorie
