What is meant by the term homologus series?
A homologous series is a family of compounds with the same functional group, which differ in formula by CH2 from the next member
1 of 6
A functional group
A functional group is an atom or group of atoms in a molecule that is responsible for its chemical reactions.
2 of 6
Chain isomerism
refers to molecules with different carbon chains. Butane and methylpropane

Position isomerism
Propan-1-ol and propan-2-ol are simple examples of position isomerism:

Stereoisomerism
s are compounds with the same structural formula (and the same molecular formula), but with the atoms or groups arranged differently in three dimensions. A good example is the alkene but-2-ene: CH3 CH CH CH3
5 of 6
Geometric isomers
are compounds containing a C=C bond with atoms or groups attached at different positions.
