what is paediatric psychology?
a field of research that is concerned with the relationship between the psychological and physical well being of children, the promotion of better health and prevention of disease

pain that persists for at least 3 months, disrupts daily life and has no purpose

what are some key areas of the brain for pain?
somatosensory cortex = pain localisation
thalamus = pain registration
hippocampus = pain perception

what is the cognitive model of pain?
individuals are not passive respondents, but rather they appreciate conditions
takes context, stimulus, cognitions, physiological awareness, emotions and behaviours into consideration

what is the fear avoidance model?
Vlaeyn et al, 1995
two possible routes for fear avoidance, either go into situation with no fear, therefore confronted and cured, or with fear, which can lead to further pain

what are a variety of treatments that can manage pain?
lifestyle change, physiological support, physical medicine, rehabilitation, intervention, pharmacology, medicine

decrease pain and anxiety, activate coping with medical conditions, assist patients to feel competent, prevent development of dysfunction, targets the person as a whole

contextual acceptance based approach to chronic pain, aims to reduce inflexible behaviour patterns that fail the sufferer by encouraging to be active in role, responding without attempts at control

found small benefit when using CBT
found ACT was better than control
found BT was very low quality but still a small difference

meta analysis specifically looked at children, 47 studies, 2884 children
psychological therapies very good at reducing headaches, but not maintained in follow up
suggests psychological more accurate in paediatric pain

looked at combining multiple treatments in children, 28 studies overall
those in the interdisciplinary condition were less likely to report pain compared to the controls, quite effective when combined together
