what is conformity?
a change in behaviour due to real or imagined influence of other people

the need to be right, see people as a source of information to guide behaviour believe their interpretation of ambiguous is more correct

what study looked at conformity and ISI?
Sherif, 1936
participants in dark room, other side projected dot of light, stationary but autokinetic effect made it looked like it moved, alone, lots of variation in how much moved, in groups, much more likely to be close and agree with what their peers

what is private acceptance?
conforming to others behaviour out of genuine belief that what they are doing/saying is right

what is normative social influence?
the need to be liked, want to be accepted by others, results in public conformity but not always private belief

what study looked at NSI in conformity?
Asch (1951)
line study with confederates
24% never conformed to group
76% on at least one trial
11% conformed every single time

what were the variations of the Asch study?
1) group size = rises with up to 4 people, after that doesn't depend who else was there
2) task difficulty = more ambiguous makes it more likely to conform
3) ally = if they had a fellow dissenter, conformity was only 6%

Milgram (1963)
average maximum shock was 360v
62.5% delivered 450v shock
80% continued after hearing pain

teacher has to place hand = 30%
