what is screening?
a process of identifying healthy people who may be at increased risk of disease or condition

what is diagnostic screening?
looks for early signs of disease or abnormality e.g cervical screening or prostate screening

what is disease detection behaviour?
actions performed for the purpose of identifying or confronting a health problem, by themselves, do not make a person healthy

- infectious diseases
- sickle cell disease

what is the nhs screening programme?
introduced in 1988
all women aged 25-64
7% decrease each year with regular checkups
however focus changed to looking for HPV cells rather than anything else

Anandan, Kuby, Lykins and Graham (2014)
asian women are less likely to have intention to get pelvic examination
no significant difference in genital self image
past experience and fear was the strongest predictors of intention

anxiety levels were consistent in other studies with women with high grade results (e.g cancer diagnosis), compared to low grade results.
highest anxiety in younger women, those with children, smokers
