Status
the honour or prestige attached to a person's position in society

Ascribed Status
a position or social standing given to an individual on the basis of inherited charateristics

Achieved Status
a social position which individuals are able to gain through hard work

Power
is the ability of people or groups to exert their will over others and get their own way, even if sometimes others resist this

Politics
is concerned with the struggle to gain power and control.

Authority (Type of Power)
is power which is accepted as legitimate (fair and right) by those without power. We obey them because they have right to tell us what to do.

Coercion (Type of Power)
is that type of power which is not accepted as legitimate by those without without, as the power-holders rule without the consent of those they govern. People only obey because they are forced to by violence or the threat of violence.

Traditional Authority
is based on history and tradition. For example, the royal family had authority based on tradition. it can also be based on religious books and values.

Legal Rational Authority
we accept authority because of the position someone holds.

Charismatic
charisma is a quality some people have of impressing other by seeming special or even unique.

Theoretical approaches
looking at a social issue through the eyes of one particular type of theorist

Structuralism
look at big picture and how society makes us what we are.they concentrate on way structure of society has an influence on our everyday lives

Interactionism
focus on smaller groups and individuals - concentrate on way people behave within society, how they interact with others, how people live daily lives, which makes society what it is
