Genotypes and Phenotypes
Genotype is the genetic composition of an organism. Phenotype is the characteristic that is expressed in an organism.
1 of 6
Genes and Alleles
A gene is a section of DNA that is a sequence of nucleotide bases. An allele is a different form of this gene.
2 of 6
Possible pairings of alleles
Two of the same allele is called homozygous. Two different alleles are called heterozygous.
3 of 6
Dominant and recessive
A dominant allele always appears in the phenotype, either homozygous dominant or heterozygous. A recessive allele only appears in the phenotype if it is on its own, for example two recessive alleles, this is called homozygous recessive.
4 of 6
Co-dominance
Two alleles contribute to the phenotype, they are equally dominant.
5 of 6
Multiple alleles
A gene has more than two allelic forms.
