what are the strengths of postal questionnaires?
quick to send out, cheap, can send to a large sample, gathers quantitative data, can be repeated using the same questions, not influenced by researchers presence, ethical as people dont have to answer, answers can be compared

what are the weaknesses of postal questionnaires?
low response rates, researchers can manipulate by choosing who to send to, not everyone can read/write, questions cant be explained, extra questions cant be asked, cost of offering reward for answering

questionnaires that are filled out in the researchers presence

what are the strengths of face to face questionnaires?
higher response rates, researcher knows who answered, can see persons body language, can explain questions, can ask extra questions, participants dont need to read/write, can be repeated

what are the weaknesses of face to face questionnaires?
expensive due to hiring other people, time consuming, cannot ask as many people, researchers presence may influence answers, researchers may have selection bias

what are closed questions?
questions which are usually multiple choice or short answer

what are the strengths of closed questions?
quicker for respondents to answer, can be repeated, easy to compare answers, can ask a bigger sample, multiple choice can help people understand the question, can ask peoples feelings using a scale, people are more likely to answer as theyre short

what are the weaknesses of closed questions?
limits peoples answers, answers may not be genuine, answers people want to give might not be available, may be confusing if there are many choices, limits people to one answer, doesnt allow people to explain

what are open questions?
space provided for respondents to write what they want

what are the strengths of open questions?
unlimited answers are available, people can explain their answers, allows people to give detailed answers

what are the weaknesses of open questions
not everyone will explain their answers, may put people off from answering because they are time consuming, cant cover a large sample, difficult to compare answers, people may not have language skills, may not be able to write their answer

what are the 3 issues with questions?
may be leading, ambiguous or be recall meaning people have to remember things

what is a pilot study?
a smaller version of the study done before the real study to ensure that it works

what is operationalising?
turning concepts into something measurable and easy to understand

easy to collect quantitative data, large sample, researcher doesnt influence answers, can be repeated, can compare results over time

homeless not included, not everyone can read, researcher cant explain questions, closed questions limiting answers
