3b revision summary

?
what is responsible for the increase in the worlds population
modern medicine- so less people are dying from disease. also modern farming techniques so less people are dying from hunger
1 of 18
suggest 3 ways in which a rising population is affecting the environment
were increasing the demand on the environment by using up more raw materials and using more energy. were also producing more waste and reducing the amount of land available for other plants and animals
2 of 18
what are the 4 main activities that use up land
building, farming, quarrying and dumping waste
3 of 18
name 5 important stores of carbon
oceans, lakes, ponds, green plants and peat bogs
4 of 18
why is it so important to have stores of carbon
to reduce the amount of co2 present in our atmosphere to reduce global warming
5 of 18
name 2 important greenhouse gases and why are they called greenhouse gases
methane and carbon dioxide- because they re-radiate the suns heat back down to earth
6 of 18
give 3 reasons why people chop down large areas of forests
paper from wood, timber as a building material and create space for farming
7 of 18
what is biodiversity and why does deforestation reduce it
the variety of different species in a habitat. deforestation reduces it as it destroys a large habitat
8 of 18
what other problems does deforestation lead to
more co2 in the atmosphere from burning and decay (microbes release co2 from resp) also more methane in the atmosphere as cattle produces methane and so do microbes. lastly less co2 is absorbed by plants
9 of 18
explain why using peat free compost is better for the environment
it means less peat bogs have to be drained so the partly rotted plants (peat) don't fully decay and release the co2 they had been storing
10 of 18
describe 3 possible consequences of global warming
sea levels rise as ice caps melt and warmer temps causes it to expand. more extreme weather events e.g. more rainfall and hurricanes. biodiversity could be reduced if species can survive in new temps
11 of 18
what is fermentation
when bacteria or yeast break down sugars by anaerobic respiration
12 of 18
what are the 2 main components of biogas
co2 and methane
13 of 18
why do chickens kept in tiny cages in heated sheds need less food
because they need less energy as they don't move around a lot so less energy is lost in movement and also less energy is wasted as heat to keep them warm
14 of 18
what microorganism is the main source of mycoprotein
a fungus called fusarium
15 of 18
summarise the main arguments against efficient food production
some people think keeping animals in cages is cruel, keeping animals closer together means easier spread of disease, antibiotics are given to the animals so when we eat them we can develop antibiotic resistance, heating the shed uses fossil fuels
16 of 18
what is sustainable food production
having enough food without using resources faster than they can renew
17 of 18
give 2 ways fish stocks can be reserved
fishing quotas and controlling mesh sizes in nets
