3.2 - Forces In Motion

?
Tension
A force that is experienced by any rope, string, cable or wire that is being pulled, hung, rotated or supported.
1 of 14
Normal Contact Force (Reaction Force)
The force that acts perpendicular to the point of contact of a body and the surface with which it is in contact.
2 of 14
Upthrust
The upwards force that a liquid or gas exerts on a body floating in it due to the water displaced.
3 of 14
Friction
Occurs between two surfaces in contact with one another and is caused by interatomic and intermolecular forces when surfaces are in contact.
4 of 14
Drag
A force that opposes the motion taking place when an object is moving through a fluid.
5 of 14
Equilibrium
When all forces acting on an object in the same plane (coplanar forces) are balanced - there is zero net or resultant force, or, in terms of motion, the object is either stationary or is travelling at constant velocity
6 of 14
Moment of Force (Turning Moment)
The product of a force and the perpendicular distance of its line of action from the point or axis.
7 of 14
Principle of Moments
For an object to be in rotational equilibrium, the sum of the clockwise moments must equal the sum of the anticlockwise moments.
8 of 14
Couple
Occurs when two equal, parallel forces act in opposite directions to produce a rotation.
9 of 14
Centre of Mass
The single point at which all of the mass of the object can be assumed to be situated.
10 of 14
Centre of Gravity
The single point through which the entire weight of the object can be thought to act.
11 of 14
Density
Mass per unit volume
12 of 14
Archimedes' Principle
The upward buoyant force (upthrust) exerted on an object immersed in a fluid, whether fully or partially submerged, is equal to the weight of the fluid that the object displaces.
13 of 14
Pressure
Force per unit area at right angles to the area.
