B3 2.2 Keeping the blood flowing

?
what are the three main types of blood vessel?
arteries, veins and capillaries
1 of 11
name two properties of arteries:
they carry blood away from the heart / they have thick walls containing muscle and elastic tissue
2 of 11
name two properties of veins:
they have thinner walls than arteries / often have valves along their length to prevent backflow of blood
3 of 11
name two properties of capillaries
they are narrow thin walled vessels (one cell thick) / carry blood through the organs and allow the exchange of substances with all the living cells in the body
4 of 11
what is the difference in structure between and artery and vein?
arteries have thicker walls than veins
5 of 11
when will blood vessels not work efficiently?
when they are two narrow / are blocked
6 of 11
what will happen?
the organs will be deprieved of nutrients and oxygen
7 of 11
what is a stent?
a metal mesh placed in the artery which is used to open up the blood vessel by the inflation of a tiny balloon
8 of 11
why is a stent used?
to keep blood vessels open
9 of 11
when is the use of a stent particularly beneficial?
when coronary arteries become narrowed due to fatty deposits, cutting of the blood supply to the heart
10 of 11
what could leaky valves do and how can they be replaced?
they could cause blood to flow in the wrong direction / artificial or animal valves can be insterted in the heart
