Give three reasons as to why most of the sun's energy isn't used for photosynthesis
- Different organisms absorb different wavelengths of light from the sun - A lot of light is reflected by the clouds back into space - Light may not fall on a chlorophyll molecule

What is the equation for the net production of consumers?
N = I - (F + R)
2 of 13
What does I stand for?
Chemical energy store of ingested food
3 of 13
What does F stand for?
Energy lost in faeces
4 of 13
What does R stand for?
respiratory losses
5 of 13
Why do most food chains only have 4 or 5 trophic levels?
No more trophic levels can be supported due to the inefficiency of energy transfer between consumers as a lot of energy is lost during respiration or faeces
6 of 13
Does biomass increase or decrease as trophic levels increase?
Decrease
7 of 13
What is the equation for the efficiency of energy transfer?
Efficiency of energy transfer = energy available after transfer/energy available before transfer x100
8 of 13
What is the gross primary production (GPP)?
The total quantity of chemical energy store in plant biomass in a given area at a specific time
9 of 13
What is net primary production (NPP)?
The chemical energy store which is left when respiratory losses are taken into account
10 of 13
What is the equation for NPP?
NPP = GPP - R
11 of 13
What does R stand for?
Respiratory losses
12 of 13
Why is a low percentage of energy transferred at each stage?
Not all of the organism is consumed, some parts of the organism can't be digested hence the energy is lost through faeces, some energy is lost in excretion, some energy is lost as heat during respiration
