1 of 13
User interface
The way in which we interact with computer hardware. Examples including WIMP interface, command-line interface and graphical user interface.
2 of 13
Memory management
The memory manager allocates adequate blocks of free space in the main memory for program that are currently in use.
3 of 13
Peripheral management
Peripherals are hardware components that are not part of the CPU, including input, output and storage devices. The operating system must manage the use of these devices.
4 of 13
User management
Enables a network administrator to set different access rights for different users. Can also identify all the users currently logged on and manually log out users.
5 of 13
File management
Enables a user to create, modify, copy, delete and move files.
6 of 13
Utility system software
Includes security utilities that keep your data safe, disk organisation utilities that organise your files in folder and tidy up the disk, data compression utilities and file back up utilities.
7 of 13
Encryption software
Uses an algorithm and a key to transform plain text into cipher text. To decode the original information, it would be necessary to know both the algorithm and key.
8 of 13
Defragmentation
Moves separate parts of files around so that they can be stored together making them quicker to access. The defragmentaion also groups all the free disk space together so that the new files can be stored in one place. This optimises disk performance.
9 of 13
Data compression
Reduces the size of a file. There are two types of compression; lossy and lossless
