1.2 Radioactivity

?
What is a alpha particle?
A 2+ positive helium nucleus
1 of 9
What is a beta particle?
a fast moving electron
2 of 9
What is a gamma ray?
its a high energy electromagnetic wave
3 of 9
Why is alpha highly ionising?
they are large, and move relatively slow so release all their energy quickly
4 of 9
How penetrating is alpha?
Least penetrating. Stopped by a thin sheet of paper or skin
5 of 9
How penetrating is beta?
It can penetrate through paper and skin, yet is stopped by a thick sheet of aluminium
6 of 9
How ionising is gamma?
Least ionising so can penetrate the furthest.
7 of 9
How far can gamma penetrate?
It can penetrate through paper, skin and aluminium yet can only be stopped by thick lead, and a metre of concrete
8 of 9
What effect does a electric field have on radiation?
Gamma rays are undeflected, alpha is deflected towards the negative plate, ad beta is undeflected towards the positive plate ( more than alpha as its lighter)
