Functional attachment
The place gives you everything you require. For example, somewhere to live, water, food and work.

Emotional attachment
This is determined by how long you have lived there and the moods and emotions you have about the place.

Gentrification
Refers to the changes that result when wealthier people buy up properties in a low income areas and carry out home improvements. As this drives house prices up it eventually results in the movement of the poorer residents.

Social segregation
The separation of different social classes in an area. i.e the rich live in a different area to the poor.

Rural-urban migration / Urbanisation
When people move from the countryside to towns and cities, often in search of a better job. This is taking place all over the world, especially in LEDCs.

Suburbanisation
The movement of people away from urban areas (on the edge of towns/cities). This is often carried out by older people or families looking for a larger house.

Re-urbanisation
The movement of people back to towns and cities by people who live in the countryside. This is often carried out by young, often single people or sometimes by those who have recently retired.

Rural idyll
An image that people have of rural life in developed countries. They imagine close communities with less traffic and crime, near the countryside, with cosy pubs and village shops.

Greenbelt
An area of open land around a city, which is protected from development so no one is allowed to build on it.

Economic sustainablility
Allowing people to have access to a reliable income.

Social sustainability
Allowing people to have a good quality of life with opportunities to achieve their potential.

Environmental sustainability
Reducing damage to the environment and preventing all resources from being used up.

Counter-urbanisation
The movement of people back away from urban areas to the countryside. This is taking place mainly in MEDCs. This is often carried out by older people or families looking for a larger house.
