Influences on choice of material?
Functional Needs, methods of scale production, economic requirements, material avalibaility.
1 of 6
Functional Requirements?
Hardness, rigidity, weight, flexibility, buoyancy, colour, texture, environment and stability.
2 of 6
Economic Requirements?
Wastage, labour costs, repair and servicing of machinery, electricity, new training, workability of material (e.g.gold easy to work with and polished as it is soft.)
3 of 6
Manufacturing Demands?
Continuous production-toilet roll, paper. mass production-1000's. batch production-100 at a time. one-off production- custommade eg.bespoke furniture
4 of 6
material avaliability
Most products come in standard forms, shapes and sizes. wood-sheet,plank,rod/dowel form. metal-sheet,plate, box section, tube, coils of wire etc. plastic-sheet, rod, tube, block, etc.
5 of 6
Joining-permanent
welding-heat, molten metals joined with joining material. Brazing-copper and steel joined under heat, with rod made of copper and zinc alloy. Soldering-lower temperature than brazing.
