What is a cholinergic synapse?
A synapse where the neurotransmitter is called acetylcholine.

Describe what happens when an action potential arrives at the end of a pre-synaptic neurone?
Causes calcium ion channels to open, diffusion of calcium into knob. This causes neurotransmitter vesicles to bind to membrane. Neurotransmitter diffuses across syanptic cleft. Causes sodium channels in post synaptic knob to open.

Why is there a lot of mitochondria in the knob?
Because it is required to make ATP for the reformation of acetylcholine.

What 2 ways do drugs affect synapses?
1. they stimulate nervous system by creating more action potentials in post synaptic neurone (enhance). 2. They inhibit nervous system by creating fewer action potentials (reduces body's responses)

What do endorphins do?
Block the sensation of pain by binding to pain receptors.

What is serotonin?
a neurotransmitter involved in the regulation of sleep and certain emotional states.

What is thought to be the cause of clinical depression?
A reduced activity of the neurones which release serotonins.

What treatment is used for clinical depression and how does it work?
Prozac - stimulates the production of neurones which release serotonins.

What is GABA?
A neurotransmitter that inhibits the formation of action potentials when it binds to post synaptic neurones, e.g. valium.
