3.1.2

?
What is the outer-shell electron configurations of Group 2 atoms?
2 s2.
1 of 9
Explain redox reactions of Group 2 elements.
Each metal atom is oxidised, losing two electrons to form a 2+ ion with the electron configuration of a noble gas; the Group 2 element is a reducing agent because it has reduced another species.
2 of 9
How do Group 2 elements react with oxygen?
Redox reaction; form a metal oxide, with the general formula MO, made up of M2+ and O2- ions see blue 3.1.2 flashcard 1.
3 of 9
How do Group 2 elements react with water?
The Group 2 elements react with water to form an alkaline hydroxide, with the general formula M(OH)2, and hydrogen gas.
4 of 9
How do Group 2 elements react with dilute acids?
metal + acid = salt + hydrogen.
5 of 9
What is the trend in reactivity for Group 2 elements?
Reactivity increases down the group; Group 2 elements react by forming +2 ions, this needs first and second ionisation energies; ionisation energy decreases own the group because the attraction between the nucleus and outer electrons decreases.
6 of 9
How do Group 2 oxides react with water?
They react releasing hydroxide ions, OH-, an forming alkaline solutions of the metal hydroxide.
7 of 9
What is the trend of solubility of hydroxides?
Solubility increases down the group, so the resulting solutions contain more OH- ions and more alkaline; Mg(OH)2 is only slightly soluble, low OH- concentration, pH = 10; see blue 3.1.2 flashcard 2.
8 of 9
How can Group 2 compounds as bases be used?
Ca(OH)2 in agriculture to neutralise acid soils; Mg(OH)2 and CaCO3 as ‘antacids’ in treating indigestion.
