Specialised cells adapted to carrying nerve impulses from one part of the body to another.
1 of 11
What does the cell body contain?
A nucleus and large amounts of rough endoplasmic reticulum for proteinsynthesis and neurotransmitters
2 of 11
What are dendrons?
They are small extensions of the cell body which subdivide into smaller branched fibres called dendrites.
3 of 11
What direction do dendrons carry nerve impulses?
Towards the cell body.
4 of 11
What are the Schwann cells?
They surround the axon, protect it and provide electrical insulation.
5 of 11
What is the myelin sheath and what is it made of?
It is a cover to the axon and is made up of the membranes of Schwann cells.
6 of 11
Which neurones transmit nerve impulses the fastest?
Myelinated.
7 of 11
What are the nodes of ranvier
Gaps between adjacennt Schwann cells where there is no myelin sheath.
8 of 11
What do sensory neurones do?
Transmit nerve impulses from a receptor to an intermediate or motor neurone. They have one dendron that carries the impulse towards the cell body and one axon that carries it away from the cell body.
9 of 11
What do motor neurones do?
They transmit nerve impulses from an intermediate or sensory neurone to an effector, such as a gland or a muscle. They have a long axon and many short dendrites.
10 of 11
What do intermediate neurones do?
They transmit impulses between neurones.
