Zimbardo et al (1973) Stanford Prison Experiment

Aim: To investigate how readily people would conform to social roles in a stimulated situation

Method

• Zimbardo converted the basment of Stanford U into a mock prison.
• 24 male students recruited to play the roles of gurads and prisoners-roles appointed randomly
• Prisoners were arrested and taken to jail- Gurads were given uniforms and sunglasses
• Prisoners were only referred to by their prison numbers and treated like every other criminal
