Acids, Bases and Salts:
- Metal oxides and Hydroxides are bases.
- Soluble hydroxides are called alkalis.
- Acid + Base ---> Salt + Water
- Neutralisation Reaction
- The salt produced in any reaction between an acid and a base or alkali depends on:
- The Acid used in the reaction
- Hydrochloric Acid produces Chlorides
- Nitric Acid produces Nitrates
- Sulfuric Acid produces Sulfates
- The metal that is present in the base or alkali.
- The Acid used in the reaction
- A solution of limewater (calcium hydroxide in water) reacts with Carbon Dioxide to produce Calcium Carbonate.
- Therefore limewater is used as a test for Carbon Dioxide
- Carbon Dioxide turns limewater cloudy.
- Therefore limewater is used as a test for Carbon Dioxide
- Hydrogen ions, H +, make solutions acidic.
- Hydroxide ions, OH−, make solutions alkaline.
- The Ph scale is a measure of the acidity or alkaliity of a solution
- In a Neutralisation Reaction, hydrogen ions react with…
