1. Strengths + weaknesses of political structures of Britain, France, Germany, Russia, Austro-Hungary
BRITAIN:
STRENGTHS: -hereditary monarch had limited power (symbolic role)
-representative government
-RULE OF LAW - monarchy, MPs had to operate within law
-BRITISH PRESS - criticised policies, politicians had to consider public opinion
WEAKNESSES: - limited suffrage
- by 1884 only 60% of male pop. could vote
- House of Lords = incompatible with burgeoning democracy
FRANCE:
STRENGTHS: -no monarch
-Senate and Chamber of Deputies could vote on laws
-Elected PM
-2/3 of senate reelected every 9 years
WEAKNESSES: - THIRD REPUBLIC= created off of instability
- new different parties with different views on future of France
- in the 1890s = 10 different PMs= constantly shifting domestic + foreign policy
-Chamber of Deputies could be dissolved by PM
GERMANY:
STRENGTHS: - Upper + Lower house of parliament neededd for law approval
-ALL men 25+ can vote
-CONSTITUTION: Freedom of Speech
-REICHSTAG= some influence
WEAKNESSES: - KAISER II = UNPREDICTABLE, dictating policy
-Military Influence strong: kaiser, Prussia
-most of time Reichstag limited power
RUSSIA:
STRENGTHS: -ALEXANDER II some reforms
-Zemstva, Duma
WEAKNESSES: - NICHOLAS II - back to firm autocracy
-Tsar Liberator (AII) halted reform (inconsistency)
-NICHOLAS II - LITTLE INTEREST in ruling, did not address domestic …
