On a cold afternoon, not long after Lockwood's first visit, he plans to lounge in front of the fire in the study but he finds a servent sweeping out the fireplace, so instead he walks 4 miles to Wuthering Heights, arriving just a sit began to snow. Lockwood knocks the door, but no one answers, but Joseph an old servant who speaks with a thick Yorkshire accent, calls out from the barn that Heathcliff is not in the house. Eventually a rough looking young man comes to let him in, Lockwood goes into the sitting room and see's a beautiful girl sitting by the fire. Lockwood thinks that she is Heathcliff's wife.
