Aim: to investigate the effects of high demand and low control on stress and illness. High grade employees are more likely to experience high demand and low grade = low control.

Procedure: Civil servants in London were invited to take part.

7,372 agreed to fill in a questionnaire (asking about sense of control, social support) and by having a health check to assess
