- Recieved high salaries and status and could receive bonuses of up to 40% of the income for surpassing targets
- Faced pressure as there were shortages of raw materials, particularly from 1936 when the military was given priority in the allocation of materials
- Economic pressure: they had limited control over access to resources, prices and wages and from 1936, they were expected to meet costs from their own income
