Why women commit less crime:

1) Socialisation - from early childhood, behaviour is stereotyped according to gender

2) Opportunity - girls tend to be supervised more, teenage girls have more restrictions and women have more domestic responsibilities

3) Chivalry - women are 'helped' rather than punished and treated more leniently

4) Bedroom Culture - girls are more likely to be in their rooms

Why there is an increase in women committing crimes:

1) Independence - more opportunity to commit crimes

2) Inequality - with pay/employment, commit crimes to be more equal

3) Changing Attitudes - more women are being convicted showing that the chivalry thesis is now less common

4) Changing Lifestyle - less likely to be mother and wife, staying
