Aldehydes

• Formula: RCHO

Physical properties:

• Colourless liquids
• Pungent smell
• Toxic
• Low melting and boiling points
• Soluble in water (solunility decreases as it gets bigger)

Chemical properties:

• Redox reactions
  • Very easily oxidised 
  • Will reduce
    • Fehling's 
    • Benedicts
• Reduction back to parent alcohol 
  • Reducing agent is NaBH4
