Reasons

• Because the french and been driven out
• To stop the communists
• To stop further communist successors (domino theory)
• Initially to support the Diem government
• Then to oppose the Diem government
• The Gulf of Tonkin incident

US did not particularly like Diem (gets power mad - always uses army to crush opponents)
