Why Hitler became Chancellor of Germany in 1933

  • Weimar Republic no longer ruling democratically. President using Article 48. This resulted in the German public feeling as if they didn't need a ruler to govern the country democratically as they had never had a successful democracy (before the Weimar Republic the Tsars were autocratic). Therefore the people were happy to vote for more radical parties like the Nazis and the Communists helping Hitler to gain votes. The 3 chancellors failed to rule effectively and the constant elections, yet the inability of any party to gain a majority, made the public want a strong leader rather than the continue with the uncertainty that was reigning in German.
