Glasgow was an industrial region supported mainly by the shipbuilding industry. The local steel and coal industries in Glasgow were closely linked to the shipbuilding industry providing many local and key materials. So, when overseas competetion in the late twentieth century led to the collapse of the ship building industry (the main industry), the other smaller, related industries fell to. This type of collapse is referred to as the domino effect. This collapse led to deindustrialisation with many shipyards lying deserted and empty along the river Clyde.
