Why did Heath lose the 1974 election?

Oil price shock
1973- Egypt & Syria vs. Israel, the West supported Israel so their oil supply was cut, Britain relied on oil from the Middle East for 50% of energy needs.
A State of Emergency was called, this resulted in the 3 day working week- it undermined confidence in the government.
NOT Heath's fault.
Three day working week
Followed the oil price shock
It created conditions such as:
- No TV was transmitted after 10:30pm
- There was a 50mph speed limit introduced
- Electricity was only provided for 3 days a week to businesses
It reduced the idea that the Conservatives were competant navigators of the economy.
Miners strike
This was a successful strike led by the miners from January to February 1972, it began becasue miners wanted a 47% pay rise, while government policy was limited to 8%
