Why did Churchill become prime minister in 1940?

= A confrontation between Churchill and Halifax (foreign secretary).

Churchill wasn't the favoured choIce for prime minister but Halifax wanted Britain to surrender because he wanted peace. Churchill didn't want to surrender because he didn't think that Britain could negotiate good terms. To begin with, very few people agreed with Churchill.

Halifax turned down the role to be wartime PM because Churchill would constantly be on his back.

July 1940 - France had been defeated by Germany.
