Who was Joseph Smith?

Joseph Smith was the son of a poor farmer who, in 1832, claimed to have discovered golden plates in Palmyra, New York. He said he was guided by an angel called Moroni who helped him translate the writings.He set up the religion Mormonism, which was based on Christian beliefs bt allowedpolygamy and several different ideas. At first their were 5 Mormons who followed these beliefs. 

Joseph Smith claimed that these plates said that whoever found them would restore the church of Jesus Christ in America and build up God's kingdom on earth, ready for Jesus' second coming.
