Who looked after the sick?

Women: wives, mothers and midwives

Women treated most illnesses. The local wise woman or lady of the manor was called to use her skills and knowledge. They could qualify as surgeons by working as apprentices, but they weren't allowed to become physicians. They were quite successful because they knew a wide range of remedies and they were able to use their knowledge to cure the people.

Hospitals

The first hospitals appeared in town in the eleventh century. They mostly cared for older people, as they could no longer take care of themselves. They were ran by monks and nuns, who provided food, warmth and prayers. They setted up hospitals for different reasons. Some took are of guild, organisations of wealthier townspeople.
