statistical frequency = the average for a population is 'normal' because it is majority, being statistically infrequent is 'abnormal' as its not in the average

strenths - can be seen as objective

weaknesses - statistics always change, can single out minorities 

failure to function adequately = inability to cope with everyday activities, inablility to perform daily tasks such as washing are often diagnosed with psychological disorders
