What is culture?

Culture is a shared way of life that binds individuals together. It can be separated into seven areas:

• Customs – Giving/receiving presents at Christmas, Chocolate eggs at easter

• Traditions – Christmas, Easter

• Language -

• Skills – Societies may have high regard for knowledge and skill in the skills which are most useful in their society, e.g. hunting

• Beliefs – Different religions, political opinions

• Norms – Everyday routine, what is expected by most members of a society

• Values – The reasoning behind those norms, e.g. We give up our seats for elderly people because…
