What is a tort?

A tort is a civil wrong committed by one individual against another. There are various torts covering a wide range of circumstances. For example, claims can be made by:

• an injured road user
• patient injured by a negligent doctor
• someone who has suffered due to excessive noise
• someone injured when visiting a premises
• celebrity libelled by a magazine
• landowner whose land has been trespassed on 

A claimant to a tort action = normally seeking some form of remedy (usually in the form of damages) paid by the tortfeasor in order to compensate for the tort.…
