What happened after the Rump was dissolved?

  • The dissolution gave power to the Army Council, who began the process of creating a new governing body
  • Instead of an elected Parliament, they created a Nominated Assembly - 144 'persons fearing God' were summoned to form the Assembly (this angered Cromwell because the Assembly was not a Parliament as it had not been elected)
  • The Assembly met in July 1653 and appointed a new Council of State
  • It was never intended to be permanent, and immediately fixed November 1654 as the date for its own dissolution

Who were the members of the Nominated Assembly?

  • 116 were gentry; 199 were Justices of the Peace; 24 had sat in a previous Parliament
  • Many were moderates, but some were radicals
  • The Council of State contained some
